German Chocolate Cake is a classic dessert that is beloved by many. It is a rich and decadent cake that is perfect for special occasions or for satisfying a sweet tooth.
Here's a recipe for baking the best German Chocolate Cake:
Ingredients:
For the cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
For the frosting:
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk,
butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- Gradually add the hot water to the batter, stirring until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans, and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans before removing them.
- While the cakes are cooling, make the frosting. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and comes to a boil.
- Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the vanilla extract, coconut, and pecans until well combined.
- Allow the frosting to cool slightly before using it to frost the cakes.
- To assemble the cake, place one of the cake layers on a cake plate or serving platter. Spread a generous amount of frosting over the top of the cake layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting, and spread a generous amount of frosting over the top of the second cake layer.
- Use the remaining frosting to frost the sides of the cake, swirling the frosting with a spatula for a decorative effect.
