Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

For the frosting:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  5. Gradually add the hot water to the batter, stirring until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans, and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans before removing them.
  8. While the cakes are cooling, make the frosting. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
  9. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and comes to a boil.
  10. Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the vanilla extract, coconut, and pecans until well combined.
  11. Allow the frosting to cool slightly before using it to frost the cakes.
  12. To assemble the cake, place one of the cake layers on a cake plate or serving platter. Spread a generous amount of frosting over the top of the cake layer.
  13. Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting, and spread a generous amount of frosting over the top of the second cake layer.
  14. Use the remaining frosting to frost the sides of the cake, swirling the frosting with a spatula for a decorative effect.
  15. Serve and enjoy your delicious German Chocolate Cake!
